How You Can Use The TGROW Model To Solve Your Problems

Finding the right tools that connect clients with their goals and aspirations is vital

for the success of a clients’ personal and professional endeavours.

SheCan Consulting uses an array of coaching tools and models to help clients understand their position in respect to their goals, and one of our favourites is the TGROW model!

The TGROW Model is an adaptation of John Whitmore’s GROW Model that was developed in the UK in the late 1980s. This model is used widely across the coaching industry as a tool for guiding a client who simply doesn’t know where to start.

TGROW stands for Topic, Goal, Reality, Options, and Way Forward, and is broken down as followed:

T – Topic

Topic is an important stage of the model that allows a person to identify a specific area that needs attention. This allows the coach to help their client focus in on a single area and discard topics that are unrelated or separate from the main goal.

Defining the topic is to define the larger environment that has a negative impact on your long-term aspirations.

G – Goal

The Goal stage is where the client clearly defines a specific endpoint that they want to attain. A goal can be broken down into different sub-groups: long-term, medium-term, and short-term.

R – Reality

The Reality stage of the TGROW model is where the client is currently with their situation and any other issues that are facing in relation to their topic & goal.

O – Options

This stage is all about brainstorming the options that the client has to attain their goal. This gives both the coach and client the opportunity to define any obstacles that might get in the way of achieving the clients goals.

W – Way Forward

Once the best option has been decided for the client, it is time to decide on a way forward to executing the option chosen. Aka. What are the next steps that need to be taken to attain the clients goals?

For this stage, it is important to set a clear timeline so the client is able to be held accountable for the steps taken to achieve their goal.

While using the TGROW model, it can sometimes feel like all the attention is put towards the problem identification, when it should rather be shifted towards focusing on finding a solution to the problem. Try walking yourself through each stage of the model and see if you can find a solution to your problem!
